Back at It.

I’m Sorry for the slow pace of posts recently. Between life and having the flu there just hasn’t been much time for posting. I hope to rectify that soon.

Using BloGTK with wordpress.com

I just wanted to write a quick article on how to set up BloGTK with wordpress.com. As I figure that people finding the previous post might be interested in such.

In the accounts and Preferences section, on the Accounts settings tab:

Server URL: http://your.wordpress.com/xmlrpc.php

Username: Your username

Password: Your password

Blogging System: Choose “Movable type”

Click Save

Click OK

Then in the main BloGTK window Click File -> Connect

At this point you should be good to go. On the Advanced tab of the main window Keywords is where you set your tags.

Hope this helps

After some quick Testing it looks like I May be moving over to BloGTK

BloGTK supports more then the copy of Gnome-Blog I was using did. Not having to go to WordPress.com after each post to set tags and catagory will be nice.

I will give it a try for a while and maybe next week write a small review of it.

Phorm (Yuck)

It seems that there is a lot of noise about Phorm in the Blogosphere and that it is just catching my attention recently. (odd really since I spend a lot of time reading on Security and Privacy matters).

There are a couple of anti-Phorm web sites most of which you can get to by starting at BadPhorm. Of particular interest is a counter measure (tho limited) available here

So far it seems to be mainly ISP’s in the UK that have gone ahead with this very bad idea. That in no sense means it is a UK only problem as I am sure that Phorm will try to sign up as many ISP’s as they can globally. I would urge anyone who is interested in preserving their privacy to write to their respective ISP and let them know you don’t want them to implement Phorm webwise technology. It would definitely be worth noting in any letter that you send the history of “Phorm” which was formerly 121media which even just minor googling of, brings up their association with spyware.

If anyone has examples of Phorm mangled cookies, (paired with their un-mangled versions) I’d appreciate getting my hand on them to see if it is possible to write a Firefox add-on or proxy software that can strip the phorm tags back off the cookies thus rendering Phorm moot.

Another idea until there is a better solution to this might be for those of us in un-affected countries to run SSL proxies like Psiphon for people in the UK to tunnel through as that would (by my current understanding) encrypt the cookies (via the ssl tunnel) and thus make them invisible to the Phorm boxen.

addemdum — it seems (from the technical writeup mentioned in the Blue light Touchpaper Blog below) that even a simple proxy would work to bypass Phorm/WebWise as long as the proxy was not on port 80. For example, an open proxy on port 12000 or 443 or anything other then 80 would totally be ignored by Phorm/WebWise. Provided, of course, that the proxy was not on an infected (errrr, pardon me affected) ISP.

Thoughts and comments appreciated

addendum.. people in th UK on effected ISP’s may wish to consider using TOR and configure it to use non-UK exit nodes. not the best option and a little technical to set up (be sure to use torbutton and Privoxy). But possibly better then being tracked every step of the way. There is also I2P (I’ll provide a link when I can be sure I’m looking at the correct site.. their old URL seems defunct) but I that to be a bit bandwidth heavy. YMMV

Addendum 2 – I just downloaded technical documentation from the Blue Light Touchpaper Blog on Phorm. I’ll give it a read over and see if there are any new insights.

Testing Embedding video’s

This is another test of embedding videos. particularly Revver videos into my WordPress.com Blog. As I found this method in a Revver video I am using that Video as the test case.

Vodpod videos no longer available. from revver.com posted with vodpod

Sad Realization

Was doing a bit of personal interest research yesterday and it seems my Blog will probably just never make the radar in any big way.

It seems the things I am interested in and tend to want to blog about have little in common with what the general Internet masses are busy being interested in. This is probably for two reasons. Firstly, I have never really “Fit” into the main stream, even when I was of an age to be part of the main stream. Which brings us to the second fact, which is that I am no longer of an age to really fit into the man stream. Which given the first fact suits me just fine.

However, there is the mild grief that comes with being on the “outs” from the main crowd. The Fact that when I look up what is popular and realize that I have no idea who “Natalie Gulbis”, “Naomi Campbell”, “Cindy Mccain” or “Beyonce Knowles” are, or that I have no interest in Big Media’s exploitation of the transgendered community in their coverage of the “Pregnant man”, or even my total lack of interest in thing like “American Idol” and the “WWE”, all just go to highlight my apartness from the main group. Strangely other then the mild grief which comes from that sense of apartness, I am unable to summon the want, need or desire to partake of the things mentioned above. I am quite happy with my interests where they are.

I guess that is enough self indulgent ramblings for today. Best Wishes to all, and I’ll write more later.

Monday In Fredericton

The holiday weekend seems to have messed with my normal blogging. As I write this I am sitting in a mall in Fredericton in stead of at home. Luckily I set up Plogit and so instead of just being bored at this point I can work on my blog.

The long weekend was a quiet one for me. The next few days however will be less so. I’m not sure what it was about the weekend but I was just not in the right space to get a revver video up. Hopefully I will be able to get a new one up in the next few days. At the very least I need to comment on the lack of comments on my poll.

Well, that is all for now. I will post more later.

This is a test. I am writing this entry on my Zire 72.

Update

It worked. I’m trying out “Plogit“. Although it doesn’t appear to be under active development.. it does seem to work well enough. I’ll be trying it out further to see how I like it and if there are any  problems.

Well, after a very relaxing hike around St. Andrews. I’m feeling quite relaxed and refreshed. I also managed to get several pictures for a “St Andrews in 3D” photo gallery I’m putting together. I hope to have a good start on it up by early summer and will add to it as the summer goes on.

The gallery will have both anaglyphs and cross-eye pictures. I’m not sure where I’ll host it yet but probably on one of my Geocities pages.
